And on the other end of the spectrum...
If Cardcaptor Sakura was fluffy and cute stuff...
And Love Roma was normal and cute stuff...
Then Saikano is DEFINATELY the sad, depressing, heart-wrenching stuff.
I read 6 volumes of Saikano in the last 3 or so days (I had the first copy already, and the other 6 I got from Anime North). It starts pretty regular, teenagers that are falling in love and want to run away together, overcoming difficulties, talking to each other, flying in the air killing the enemy troops.
Well, that last part isn't regular. The premise of Saikano is that a couple, named Shuji and Chise (guy and gal respectively) have just started going out, and it turns out Chise is the ultimate weapon.
I mean she was a normal human being, and then MODIFIED INTO THE ULTIMATE MACHINE OF MASS DESTRUCTION! Kind of creepy if you think about it. Afterwards, throughout the rest of the series, Chise grows stronger and more deadly, and her humanity continues erode as the machine part of her takes over.
Obviously boyfriend Shuji isn't too happy about that. Like any good series, you tend to care for the characters, and probably start to cheer for a romantic couple or for some side in a war.
Typically, in Saikano, you cheer for Shuji and Chise. Unfortunately, they're often apart, and well, let's just say there are instances when you go "SHUJI! NO! STAY AWAY FROM YOUR FIRST LOVE! DON'T STICK IT TO HER! DEFINATELY DON'T STICK IT TO HER!"
For some reason, the series is very...explicit (hence the shrink-wrap and stickers that say explicit content). Technically you could put a lot of stuff off-screen (like the killing) but you'd miss out on the significant impact that it has.
Or at least that's the theory.
The art is pretty sketchy, like very sketchy. Ridiculously rough, and not very clean usually, but this is war people. And really, the art is an acquired taste, some people like it (like me), others don't.
It's a really good series, kind of weird at times, definitely speaks truth at times (war is bad and such), but always engrossing. Hell, some chapters don't even have a speck of text (except SFX), and those are some of the best chapters.
It's good stuff! Don't leave it around for your parents to read though...this is probably much worse than Legal Drug in that regard (hell, in LD there's a couple of chapters that take place in a school located in the middle of nowhere, an all-BOYS school. An all-boys school that elects a BRIDE, a MALE bride, and boys look at other boys!).

........ this is why I bought safe mangas this time. I wasn't going to take them with me to school, and leaving them at home for 4 months on my shelf is like posting a sticky note saying: "read my stuff and see what I've been up to!!"
